Last January I became a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant. I was working in food service part-time and was not happy. I missed being home with my girls and having the time and energy to work on my house and do things with my family. Mary Kay seemed ideal. I could be self-employed, plus it offered flexibility and was fun!

I had my debut party and was off to a great start! But then the negative thoughts began to creep in. I let fear hold me back and became discouraged. When my husband deployed overseas, depression set in. Then I had surgery...

But now I am back with a renewed sense of determiniation! Mary Kay is an awesome company who values putting God first, Family second and your Career third. They practice the Golden Rule and there is no glass ceiling to break through.

I went to my first Mary Kay Success meeting of the new year this past Monday. My Director issued a challenge and I decided to take it on. As of this coming Monday I should meet the challenge requirements. It happened so fast! I hope that is a sign of good things to come in my business this year!

I am looking forward to this year. I know there will be fears to face and challenges to overcome, but it will only prove to make success all the more sweeter.

Rainy Days

We are expecting bad weather today. Thankfully, I've done the grocery shopping this morning and now have everything I need here at home to make meals.

I plan to spend my day making sweet tea and baking brownies for dessert. I will putter and tidy up around the house. I will engage the girls in rainy day occupations such as reading, board games, jigsaw puzzles, crafts, and a movie. Rainy days are good for afternoon naps as well.

Rainy days are not bad days in my book. They are days that offer a change of pace and bring a new sense of coziness to our life here at home.

Without rain, we'd never have rainbows. The sun will shine again, but today, let it rain...

Mindful Homemaking

These days I find such peace and contentment here at home as I am learning to slow down and be mindful in my homemaking.

I realized that homemaking is never done and so I no longer attempt to finish it all in one day. There will always be dishes to wash, laundry to do, floors to be swept, etc.

Now I take my time and enjoy the process of bringing beauty and order to our home. I find I am becoming more patient and calm.

No longer do I look at homemaking as a burden to rush through so I can get to the "fun stuff". Tending my home has become fun! I still have plenty of time to do the things I enjoy.

So if you are feeling harried and hurried, stop. Breathe. Slow down and focus on the task at hand. Do what you can today. The rest will wait tomorrow for you.

Today I thought I would share a few of my collections with you. None cost much at all, but I love them and they make me smile. That's the most important thing in decorating, isn't it? Love.

I adore these colorful glass bottles! They are small, but the colors are so pretty. They were thrifting treasures. I only paid $1.75 each for them and I hope to find more.

The two dolls on the right are mine, but I inherited the doll in pink because my girls think she is creepy. Poor Dolly! I wrote a post about Polly and Nelly which you can read here.

I love Willow Tree figurines for the beauty and simplicity! The ones I have represent my husband and I and our children.

Simple Changes

Today I decided to change up the pictures in my living room. This large wall looks a little plain at the moment, but I will make do with it as it is until I find the perfect pieces to add to it.

This is now my picture gallery wall. I am going to get my Mama to build shelves that fit the length of the nook and will make it look built-in.

Isn't it funny how the simplest changes make a whole new look?

The Sunroom

Making Do and Thrifting Treasures

The light in my office has taken on a life of its own. It goes off and turns on again at will. So I determined to remedy the situation myself for the time being. I unhooked the printer that no longer works with my new Windows 7 operating system and replaced it with a lamp from the bedroom. I'll make do with this until I can have my BIL check it out.

I went to the thrift shop today and came away with the loveliest books to while away the time with.

A Return to Frugality

I puttered around the house today tackling a few small odd jobs that often get neglected in the rush of daily life. I took my time and enjoyed bringing order and beauty to our home sweet home.

Over the last three weeks, I have had alot of time to examine my life, to ask questions of myself, and to ponder these things in my heart.

I worked for nearly a year part-time outside the home and during that time meals were whatever was quick and easy, my home suffered as I was in too much pain and too tired to do all the things I usually did. And frugality? Well that was done away with almost entirely.

Now, I am in no pain since my surgery and my heart is once again turned homeward. I want to get back to being frugal and enjoying the simple pleasures in life. I want to once again enjoy cooking and baking from scratch, working in my yard, crafting, and be content and peaceful.

I want to continue to learn new things in the art of homemaking. There is so much one can do at home! I am choosing to look at it as a grand adventure, this return to frugality.

Having worked outside the home, I am more thankful than ever to be a homemaker...

Valentine Pretties

As promised, I return today feeling much better and to show you a few of my Valentine pretties!

This is my large picture window in the living room that overlooks the front porch and yard. I put up Valentine window clings. The red and white hearts are paper doilies stuck to the glass with a dot of Elmer's glue! It washes off windows fairly easily.

I love cherubs so I placed a few of my favorites on the window sill along with candles and a red cardinal figurine I received from Mama several years ago. Cardinals are my favorite bird and since red is the color of love, I thought it was the perfect addition.

On this little table I slipped a couple of the paper doilies under the glass, along with a heart shaped votive candle holder.

I made this flower arrangement use faux flowers and greenery right before Christmas after seeing an arrangement my SIL had done for her home.

I have had this sweet little sign for years. I think I picked it up at a dollar store.

More dollar store goodies adorn the wall in my dining room.

The love of family, home and hearth bring great joy to my life.

Recovering....

Yesterday was a miserable day all around. Seems I came down with a stomach virus. It is so rare for me to get sick - which is a good thing because I am a big baby when ill. I just don't like it!

Thankfully, I remained fever-free last night and slept well. I think I am on the upswing! I plan on taking it easy today just to be safe and I hope to return tomorrow with pictures of my Valentine pretties.

Home Goals 2012

Next month will be two years since we bought and moved into our home. It is a three bedroom, two bath house built in the 1950s and though it is on the smallish side {1,700 sq. ft.}, I love it!

There are a million things I would love to tackle, but my primary goal this year is to pay off as much debt as possible. Still I do plan to do a little redecorating.

Front Yard & Porch: I love the bistro set on the porch, but feel this area lacks pizazz.

~ I'm thinking of painting the porch a different color and adding a couple of largish urns filled with flowering plants. The siding is a grayish-green. What color would look good for the porch?

~ The flower beds need more plants and I want to rip out the small, sad little bushes.

Living Room: I love my couch, coffee table and the hardwood floors in this room. Still, there are lots of things I want to change, too.

~ I want to paint the walls a light gray and keep the trim white.

~ I need new curtains, slipcovers for the throw pillows, and I'd love a new area rug.

~ I would like to build a set of shelves to go the length of the recessed wall where the chairs are and make it look built in. I would make the above wall space my family gallery wall.

~ Need new artwork.

~ Repaint chairs & recover seats. Paint the end table.

Kitchen: I love the abundance of cabinets!

~ I want to paint the walls and cabinets.

~ I may remove a few cabinet doors or install glass to give it a more open feel and to be able to display my pretties.

~ Raise the curtain so it's right under the overhead shelf to allow more natural light into the room.

~ Change the counter top. Add a backsplash possibly?

~ There is not much counter space, so a table or an island of some kind would be nice.

~ Add shelves above the freezer.

~ A nice rug.

Dining Room: the ho-hum, kinda plain room... I don't really know what to do this room because there are no windows and it is open to the office. Any suggestions??

Just finished paying the bills for the month. My expenses have been rather low. I am sure not being able to get and about much has helped with that. :)

Before Alfred deployed we had gotten behind on bills. At his civilian job, he is not paid an hourly rate, but book hours which means it goes by the job as to how many hours can be charged (he is a diesel mechanic). With the economy the way it is, work had slowed way down.

I just about have us caught up...next month for sure. That will be a huge relief and then I can start putting money back in savings so we will be better prepared for slow seasons. It is also why I want to stock the freezer and pantry. I see it as a security in hard times.

How do you prepare for lean seasons?

Practicing Self-Care

Practicing self-care does not come easy to me. I am used to making sure everything gets done that needs doing, putting my family's needs first and not asking for help. But these past two weeks have taught me that self-care is a good thing.

I have had no choice but to ask for help. It is a humbling position to be in. Help with my home. Help with grocery shopping. Help with lifting things I am not yet allowed to lift.

I am learning to sleep when tired, eat when hungry, and to set boundaries. No longer do I allow others to mistreat or disrespect me. Good food is nourishing to both the body and the spirit. You can't be strong if you are eating poorly. Sleep is essential in recovery. A warm shower also helps to lift the spirits.

A clean and pretty home is practicing self-care. We deserve homes that bring us comfort and are a haven. I haven't been able to do much in the way of home-keeping, but I keep the dishes washed up, clear flat surfaces and do the laundry. Those go a long way in helping keep me sane.

Instead of fighting against what is, I accept it and am trying to make the best of it. A stack of books to read, writing in my journal, watching movies, and giving attention to my children and fur-babies are helping keep me occupied.

I am learning my lessons well.

Winter's Lullaby

It's been a napping sort of day. The day has been gray and rainy. The trees with their bare branches sway in the wind and the house is dark.

With no where to go and nothing I must do, I allow myself to succumb to slumber. Obviously I need the rest because sleep comes so easily. I am learning to listen to my body.

Today I was able to do a tad more on the house. I also ran to the grocery store to pick up a couple of much-needed items and thankfully was not out of breath! Next a quick trip to the library to pick up the books on hold for me.

The weather has been beautiful here for the past several days. Highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s. At the end of the week we'll have a little cold snap and then it will warm back up. I'm itching to get out and do some yard work, but that will have to wait until I am fully recovered from surgery.

I will close for now as I have a date to meet my beloved online to chat. Those are our date nights these days - at least while he's deployed. :)

~ Feeling so much better since my surgery and no more chronic pain.

~ My family who took care of me and ran errands that I could not do.

~ Beautiful weather. The calender says it's Winter but the fast few days have felt like Spring with highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s.

~ Not having to run the heat or air because of said weather. This will help keep the electric bill low.

On Becoming One

It is no secret that I married quite young. I was almost eighteen and had just graduated high school. Alfred had just turned twenty. We had a whirlwind courtship, marrying less than six months after we began dating. But I knew with all of my heart that he was The One.

Of course being young, we had no idea what we were getting in to. There were many ups and downs, but the important thing is that we hung in there and didn't give up.

Giving up is easy. Staying when things are hard is not. We had a lot of growing up to do, but as the years passed we also grew closer. We are bonded through the history we have built over the years and the three children we have together.

With my husband currently deployed for a year, I can honestly say I miss him like crazy and can not wait until he comes home to me. I can't imagine life without him.

To have a good marriage takes work, being able to forgive, be a good listener, communication and to keep a sense of humor. Our marriage is stronger than ever and I wouldn't trade him for the world!

We are not perfect, but are perfect for each other.

On Venturing Out

So, last night I had had enough of sitting at home. Kendall was at work and Kenzie was staying with a friend. My partner-in-crime, Kayla, and I loaded up in the car {after I found a pair of sweat pants in the closet} and hit the town!

We borrowed a couple movies from Blockbuster {free with their DVD home service} and then hit the drive-thru to grab some Krystal burgers for dinner. Though I won't be winning any fashion awards anytime soon...I can't tell you how good it felt to get out of the house for less than 30 minutes and be out and about. I was careful not to overdo and was quick to get back home to sit on my tuckus.

My Dog, Zeus

Zeus became a part of our family about a year and a half ago. He is a Cane Corso (an Italian Mastiff) but he is often mistaken for a giant pit bull. Other than chewing during his puppy stage (you should see the doors he ate through!), life with him has been wonderful!

Zeus is very smart and makes us laugh. Although he is about 100 pounds (and still has a year a half to grow!) he thinks he is our Yorkie's size. He wants to sit in our lap always. He has a face that is as soft as velvet and sweet eyes.

He is not an angel. He is always trying to get into the trash. He likes to strew ~~sticks~~ branches through the yard and has a knack for busting in the girls' bedroom when they are in the middle of a dance on Dance Central for Xbox!

He loves to talk and is sometimes sassy. I swear one time he even said Mama! A few of his favorite things are playing tug of war with his stinky rope and he happily lets the girls wipe him down with pet wipes. He doesn't like baths, lawn mowers, and knocks on the door.

Zeus is a big old "love muffin". He loves to be loved on! He is a very sweet boy to us and those who come to visit. He is even good with little kids...he just doesn't realize how big he is and can sometimes knock them down without meaning to. I have no doubt, though, that he would be a fierce protector if the occasion should ever call for it.

We love our big boy! We want to get a female companion for Zeus when Alfred comes home and name her Tsunami.

P. S. Should you ever come to visit make sure you wear a sturdy pair of shoes because he will step on your feet and it hurts! :)

I didn't go shopping, but this is what I felt like after walking to the mailbox and back! I hadn't realized the surgery had taken so much out of me. And I have approximately 5 more weeks before I can resume normal activities? I think I may go mad...

I need to go to the library, but I can't wear my jeans yet. But, I do NOT want to go be-bopping in there in my pajama pants. Sure, lots of people do it and even though I have a good reason...I just don't think I can bring myself to do it. What would you do in this situation?

Here's one good thing about today. The temperature rose to 71 degrees! It was so nice out that I turned off the heat and opened the kitchen windows to let in the fresh air. We have not had much of a Winter here and that concerns me.

We live on the Gulf Coast and I worry that we may be in store for a hurricane this year. With it not staying cold, the ocean waters are probably warmer than normal which fuels hurricanes. And I can tell you I do not do well in crisis situations. And with Alfred not being home? It's not going to be a pretty sight if it happens...just sayin'!

Puttering and Organizing

Today I did a wee bit of puttering around the house. I had Kayla get the crockpot out last night so I could put a roast on to cook this morning for dinner. I folded a load of laundry & washed/dried another. I helped Kenzie with her solar system science kit, washed a few dishes and wiped down the counters and stovetop. I also sorted and organized papers on my desk.

It felt good to do something and I was careful not to overdo.

My sister went to the store for me to get a few groceries. I can't lift anything heavier than a gallon of milk for 4-6 weeks. I will be able to drive as soon as regular clothes are comfortable since I am on not any pain meds. I can tell the incision is healing because my tummy is itching like crazy!

Since I have had so much down time, I've been reading alot of decorating blogs for ideas and inspiration for future projects. Right now I am in love with IHeart Organizing! Jen has oodles of great organizing tips and her home is decorated modern and stylish. She has given me a ton of ideas to try in my own home.

The Home Budget

Now that Christmas is over and we have turned the page into the New Year, I have turned my attentions to the budget. Being a one-income family, we need to make every cent count in order to get the most bang for our bucks.

I am fairly sure that while Alfred is deployed I can pay off our four smallest debts, leaving us with only the house, my car, and one other debt. I will be employing the snowball method. I will be opening a savings account to set money aside for emergencies. We already have a Christmas Club account which worked beautifully in 2011. I had my children's gifts purchased and wrapped before December 1st.

Other things I am looking to do with our finances this year:

~ I am tracking our spending to see exactly where our money goes. This helps us reduce/cut expenses that are not priorities so we can have more of the things we need and possibly a few desires, too.

~ I plan to build up my pantry and freezer by shopping sales and matching with coupons. With rising food costs, this provides peace of mind that even when money is tight we will still have good food on the table at a fraction of the cost.

~ Service the HVAC system in our home.

~ Pay cash for a riding mower.

~ Tear out the tub in the kids' bath and install a shower; fix the plumbing in said bath. Hoping to have enough with our tax refund, but if not I'll continue to save until I have the cash to pay for it. I'm going to see if I can hire my handyman BIL to do the work for me since Alfred is not home.

~ Buy kids a trampoline with cash. We rarely make large purchases like this, but the kids would love and it would provide an outlet for excess energy and a fun way to pass the time outdoors in the fresh air.

~ Live a life of beauty and grace within our means!

It is not easy to be in a position where you can not physically do anything, but the rest is doing me good. I feel a little better with each passing day. The bruising is fading. It is easier to get in and out of my comfy bed. Walking is less painful. Since my hospital release I have not taken any pain meds other than ibuprophen 800mg. I guess I am stronger than I thought!

The girls and I played a couple of board games they received for Christmas last night. That was fun! We have been hanging out alot watching tv and movies, talking, and listening to music. The togetherness has been nice.

Kendall's birthday is in four days. My son, my firstborn, will be 19 years old! Where have the years gone? He was an easy, lovable child who has turned into a responsible young man. He currently works two jobs and wants to get his GED this year and join the military. His father and I are so proud of him!

Diary of 5

I am seeing...numbers on paper as I work on our budget in an effort to make the most of my love's pay.

I am hearing... dogs playing tug o' war, music coming from the girls' room, and the sound of running water as my sister washes dishes while I am recuperating.

I am smelling... scented candles as they offer glowing warmth and sweet scents.

I tasted...pizza with ranch for lunch. A real treat after being served only jello and broth in the hospital!

I am feeling...limited in my physical body for the time being. But with each day that passes I get a little stronger and the pain lessens just a bit more.

A New Year, A New Day...

I had my surgery Thursday and was home Friday night. I have never been in so much pain in my life! Friday morning the nurses got me up out of bed to walk saying it would speed up the healing process. I thought they had gone insane! But, it did help. My emotions have been all over the place. I had a partial hysterectomy.

They removed the uterus, cervix and left ovary that had a 13cm cyst on it. They left the right ovary but removed a 1 cm cyst from it. I have a large abdominal incision frm the bellybutton down - which was necessary due to the size of the cyst. Now I am home and am in the process of recovery. It is a lot slower than I would prefer - but it is what it is and there's no rushing it!

The New Year has come and is now nearly over. My primary concern is, of course, getting well. I am looking forward to my husband coming home later this year. But in the meantime....

~ I want to get back to being a true homekeeper. I want to get back to cooking good-meals and looking for healthier recipes, baking, properly caring for my home and family. I am thinking about putting in another garden this year. I also have home improvement plans, both inside and out. I want our home to be our little piece of heaven on earth.

~ I want to practice better self-care. Routine medical checkups and regular exercise are a part of self-care. So is updating my wardrobe, regular haircuts, and regular beauty routines I can do myself at home. It also means proper rest, nutrition, time for fun and doing things I enjoy.

~ I want to live my life to the fullest and enjoy the simple pleasures. I want romance with my Man, new experiences, try new foods, visit new places, explore, craft, sing, learn to play piano, go to the beach, walk in the rain, develop friendships, donate to charity, and love the life that I have with my family.

There are no set in stone goals for 2012. I feel that to do so creates undue pressure and stress. I am more about going with the flow this year and enjoying it in the process.

Here's to fresh starts and blank pages in which to write upon...

To Each His Own...

All of the Christmas decorations were taken down December 26th. This morning I added the finishing touches to the shelf over my kitchen sink window. My sister is coming over in just a bit to help me clean up the house so I don't overdo it. I also have to do the grocery shopping so I won't worry about that for a while during my recovery.

The family drama that buuilt up to an explosion on Christmas Eve continues to bring forth hurt feelings. It seems that this person is determined to push away his family. One day he will realize his mistakes, but it may be too late by then. He's burning bridges and making choices that will negatively impact his future. I know you can not help anyone who doesn't want help. All we can do is stand by and watch the devastation unfold. Some choose to learn the hard way...by experience.

Today I went to the hospital for pre-op. I recently found out I had a huge ovarian cyst (10cm) and uterine fibroids. The cyst is the cause of the pain I have been in for well over a year now. The doctor was going to only remove that one ovary and do a biopsy on my cervix because I had an abnormal pap. I emailed my doctor and requested a hysterectomy because I only have insurance now while Alfred is deployed and if I needed future surgeries I would be uninsured. My thought was it was better to get it all out now in one surgery while I have the insurance - given the problems I have had.

The doctor is going to go ahead and do the hysterectomy on Thursday....I may even have my appendix removed and possibly the right ovary....it all depends on a test they will run during surgery and how everything looks when they open me up.

If it looks like cancer....she will close me up immediately and will send me to a GYN Oncologist within a month to have them do it because they have more experience, as far as staging goes. However, she doesn't *think* that will happen, but you never know for sure until they open you up.

They are cutting from the belly-button down. I'll have to have a tube down my throat and a catheter the day of the surgery. I could be in the hospital as long as until Saturday night....but I am gonna try to be out of there Friday morning. I have to be able to walk, eat, pee and manage pain control before they will release me. I, of course, am hoping to get out there ASAP.

I want to be home in my own comfy bed so I can rest and be able to talk to my husband on Skype. So if you don't hear from me for a while, it will be because I am recovering. I am looking forward to being pain-free again!

Can I admit to you, dear reader, that I am glad Christmas is over? Christmas day was nice but the days leading up to it were filled with stress, worry and family drama. It has left me exhausted physically and emotionally. I will be having surgery Thursday so perhaps I can rest then since I will physically unable to do much?

Yesterday I took down all of my Christmas decorations and packed them up. I must put them in the storage building today. I am ready to say good-bye to 2011 and usher in the New Year. The New Year brings with it 365 days of promise, expectation, hope renewed and a blank slate in which to write a new chapter in our lives.

I pray that this last week in December is filled with blessings for you. May you live each and every day to the fullest and forget not to notice and pay gratitude to the simple things in life.

Finding My Voice

As a little girl, Mama always taught me to use my manners and be polite. The problem comes in when you are afraid to say what you really think out of fear of hurting someone's feelings, making someone mad, or overextending yourself because you want everyone to think well of you. What usually happens is we become tired, resentful, and develop a martyr complex.

I'm learning to say no.

No, I don't want company...

No, I can not help with the whatever it is...

No, no, no, no, NO!

I don't go out of my way to be mean to people, but I am not going to stand by silently seething because I feel put upon by others needs and expectations. I no longer care if I ruffle feathers or make you mad. I have boundaries and if you don't like it....it's your problem.

I am finding my voice and it is freeing!

A Busy Day

I had a fairly busy day. Washed dishes, vacuumed, and cleaned the master bath. Then Kayla and I went out for lunch at Danny's Fried Chicken, where I used to work. All of my siblings work there and that is one of my son's two jobs. I was able to visit a bit with Shelly and Chelsea since it was after lunch rush.

After lunch, we went through the car wash and I vacuumed out my car. I love it when my car is all clean and sparkly - inside and out! I could have washed and vacuumed the car at home and saved the $10 I spent, but I was growing tired and still had grocery shopping and other errands to run. Sometimes, it's best to spend the money to free up time and save my energy...

Grocery shopping is not my favorite thing in the world to do. I find it incredibly tiring with loading and unloading groceries in and out of the buggy and then in and out of the car. But it is a duty that simply must be done. I went to the store where Mama works and got to see and talk to her for a few minutes.

With the shoping done, I had a bill to pay then we went to Lowe's to buy a new filter for my ShopVac. Lowe's offers a 10% military discount every day if you show your i.d. I saved $1.36 - but every penny helps and it adds up.

For our last stop, we ventured into the dollar store to buy dangly earring and a hair clip for Kayla. We have a family Christmas dinner to attend tomorrow and the girls have new outfits (dresses) to wear and, I, a new red blouse. I'll be sure to take a few pictures to share with you, dear reader.

While doing the grocery shopping I picked up baking supplies so the girls and I can do a little holiday baking this coming week. There is simply nothing better than homebaked goodies! We will listen to Christmas music, talk and laugh as we reminisce of Christmases past and look expectantly forward to this Christmas.

Health & Home

The weather has warmed up once again. It is 72 degrees but cloudy. I wish the sun was out to get rid of the chill I have in my bones despite the warm temperature.

I am getting a much needed haircut today and afterwards am taking the girls to a local nature preserve. It is free and will get us out of the house for a bit.

I met with a different doctor yesterday. I am scheduled for surgery December 29th to remove my left ovary which a 10cm cyst on it. Since the cyst is so large, it will be an abdominal incision. She will also do a coloscopy to see if the abnormal cells are cancerous. Pray it is not! Estimated recovery time is four weeks. I think I may just go mad!

Thankfully my kids are all older and will be here to help take care of me and I have family close by, too.What's going to be hard is keeping Zeus off of me. At 100 pounds, he doesn't realize how big and strong he is. He thinks he is a lap dog! He likes to sit and lay on us!

Over the next two weeks I need to get as much housework and meal planning done to make it easier on myself and the kids. I will be glad when this is all said and done and I can get back to normal life!

I have struggled much in my faith. I have a tendency to over-analyze and makes things harder than what they need to be. But Jesus doesn't ask us to do all of this.

He simply asks us to come to Him and believe.

Like little children.

Little children have such great faith. They are easily awestruck. They live in the moment and are trusting. They are uninhibited. They will dance and sway to music, sing their little hearts out, laugh with wild abandon, and shed tears without embarrassment. And when they are hurt, they run to Mama and Daddy for comfort.

We need to become like little children. We need to run to our Father in Heaven when we are hurt. He is the great Comforter. He longs to ease our burdens and show us His love. He will never leave us or forsake us. We just have to believe.

Lord, please forgive me for my lack of faith, my doubts, and my cynicism. Give me the heart and the faith of a child, and help me to believe You for all the good things You desire to give me. Thank You that Your answers to my prayers will be a powerful testimony to others of Your love and grace!

It is definitely feeling more like Winter here in south Alabama. The trees are now mostly bare and often the skies are gray. These we get much more wind than we do in the summer when we need it most!

It has been a cozy day puttering around my home. A lovely sort of day really. Dinner is already done and there is a chocolate cake baking in the oven as we speak. There are scented candles glowing in the kitchen and dining room. No rushing needed. I took my time and enjoyed the time I spent on tending to my home.

I plan to spend my evening watching a movie and reading new books I borrowed from the library. Oh, and let's not forget savoring a piece of cake with a glass of milk.

Fashion: My Kind of Style

As far as fashion goes, I am loving the comfy chic look these days. Not that my wardrobe looks anything like this *yet*, but I plan to update it piece by piece. My criteria are to only buying things I *love*, that are in my super colors and make me look fabulous.

I love this outfit. It's bright & cheerful and would be perfect to run eraands in during the Christmas season!

Gray is my favorite neutural color. I like the pop of color the teal brings to the outfit.

Navy and Peridot. I'm not a green person, but I am kinda digging this...

Cute Cranberry. This would also make a lovely holiday outfit!

I just simply love this one. The pops of berry color drew me in.

Navy and gray - classic neutral colors. You simply can't go wrong with those two.

Home Style: Inspiration

I am finding my taste in style and home decor are changing. I am no longer the pink frou-frou girl. I am more drawn to a white, black, gray, and silver palette.

Love the wallpaper and think it would look nice on one wall instead of all four. I am also digging the brocade curtains.

I love the simplicity of this room with its black & white color scheme...

Like the gray and dark wood, but the orange has got to go! A raspberry, blue or lavendar would be nice as an accent color though.

Love the geometric pattern on this pillow. Matching curtains would be interesting.

Simple, simple, simple.....and the zebra rug ain't too shabby either!

Now the rug I really want is freakin' gorgeous, but pricy! I'll have to save my pennies for this one. You can view it here.

Some may think the colors I have chosen are depressing, but I think they are rather sophisticated and chic. Can't wait to start making the changes around here. That is going to have to wait until after the New Year. Until then, I will dream and plan and hunt for beautiful items for my home.

My brave husband has begun his trek overseas for a year. Though being apart is never easy, it is necessary at this time. The good thing we will get to talk and see each other via Skype. He will get to come for two weeks for R&R sometime next year, but I can't wait until he is home for good.

Christmas 2012 will be a celebration to remember....you can bet your bottom dollar!

Christmas Decorating

I usually do all my decorating for Christmas the weekend after Thanksgiving. It didn't happen this year. The girls and I made these gorgeous snowflakes and the 3D snowflake to adorn our picture window. I love how it turned out!

The reason I waited so late to do my decorating was because I ordered this gorgeously, full artificial tree from Christmas Trees Galore. It is 7.5 feet tall and I love it!

I had originally planned to tuck in the corner (see picture below) where the lamp glow is, but it was too full and I worried the dogs would run into it and knock it over. So I rearranged the living room.

I separated my sectional into two pieces to allow room in front of the picture window for the tree.

This is where I originally wanted the tree, but this corner looks cozy now with part of the sofa, small table with Santa and a plant my sister gave me.

Dollar store Santa I've hadfor several years...

Kenzie had the idea to put my Christmas town up on the shelf in the kitchen. We bought cotton batting "snow" to drape over the shelf and books added to give a little height. The trees are pieces of the Christmas tree that inadvertedly broke off during set up. I added the Christmas plate, candy container and faux plant. I love how it turned out!

There comes a time when it's a good idea to step out of your comfort zone and try something different. I have long struggled with fear, lack of confidence and abandonment issues. So I will be starting therapy very soon. I get twelve ssessions free. Maybe that will be enough. If not, I'd be willing to pay for sessions if I felt it was helping.

I am ready for change and to be free from the ties that bind. I am looking forward to seeing what the future holds!

The Thanksgiving Holiday

We had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday because my husband, Alfred, was able to come home on a 4 day pass! He is still in the States training but will be going overseas the first week of December.

It was so good to have him home. We had Thanksgiving dinner with his siblings then went to my Mama's for dessert and to visit with her and all of my siblings.

We were also able to celebrate Kayla's 15th birthday while he was home with family and a few friends. Her birthday is actually today but we didn't want Alfred to miss out. Within the next couple of weeks, I'll be taking her up to the DMV to take the written test for her driver's permit!

I had to drive Alfred back to his mobilization station last night. Saying goodbye this time around was alot harder than the first time. There were many tears and I didn't want to let him go. He called later after we had left and the tears began to flow again.

But I will remember the memories of us being together and focus on keeping my home and family well cared for and loved until we are all together again.

Girls Who Wear Glasses

Wanna hear some FaBuLoUs news? Alfred gets to come home for Thanksgiving on a 4 day pass! I am so excited I can barely contain myself!

So now I am thinking about everything I want to do to get ready for his homecoming. Like clean the house really well 'cause I only did the bare minimum the past 2 weeks, buy his favorite foods, plan Kayla's birthday party so he can be here for it, paint my toenails, etc.

It's going to be a wonderful Thanksgiving after all....

Doctor Appointments

I went to the Navy Hospital today for a doctor appointment. I am scheduled to have an ultrasound December 7th and then I'll know more. In the meantime, I have pain medicine to give me a little relief.

Tomorrow I am going back to the hospital to have an eye test done. I can see perfectly fine, except at night if I am driving, which was especially evident last night when I was out after dark. It is rare for me to be out at that time, but I figure I may as well have the eye test while I have the insurance!

Alfred said, "I've been telling you you needed glasses! But, noooooo. You had to be stubborn."

While the weekend weather was cool, this morning the skies are gray and it's muggy. At 72 degrees, it sure doesn't feel like a November morning.

I had a good weekend. My best friend Paula came over for antique and thrift store shopping. I didn't find anything I just had to have and that's okay. We also had a birthday party to attend. My niece turned 6 years old! Had a good time visiting with all my sister/brother-in-laws. And yesterday I got to spend a couple hours visiting with my Mama.

It appears that was just the medicine I needed.....a change in scenery and adult conversation. It greatly helped to pull me out of funk I was in and I am ever-so-thankful!

Not much on the agenda for today. I intend to tidy up the house a bit, take a nap later, watch a little tv and cook dinner. I have to be up bright & early tomorrow for my doctor appointment at 8am in Pensacola.

That's about all for today...

TODAY:

Outside my window: It's a blustery day with grey, dreary skies. The wind is whipping leaves from the trees and scattering them to and fro.

I am thinking: how wonderful technology is. Though my husband is many miles away, I can still talk to him via cell phones. And when he goes overseas, I'll be able to talk to and see him via Skype!

I am thankful for: free medical insurance though the military and my doctor appointment next week.

From the learning rooms: science experiments, drawing, Charlie Chaplin, writing, baking, cooking, and lots more....

In the kitchen: Meals are very simple. Kenzie makes pancakes almost daily. Kayla made brownies last night.

I am wearing: pajamas still...

I am writing: not much of anything besides my blog and posting has been few & far between. With Alfred's deployment and my health issues, I am finding it hard to be positive and uplifting. Sometimes it's better to say nothing at all in times like these...

I am going: to pay off as many bills as possible and save money while my husband is deployed to ease the load for him when he returns.

I am wondering: whether to continue on with Mary Kay or not?

I am reading: Not much of anything right now. Need to get back in to the Word daily.

I am hoping: to get my car washed and vacuumed out soon!

I am looking forward to: being pain-free and my husband being home for good after this deployment!

I am hearing: the sound of my fingers tapping on the keyboard...

Around the house: I tidied up today as I couldn't stand to look at my home any longer. I've been taking it easy as to avoid as much pain as possible.

I am pondering: what this next year will hold for me and our family.

One of my favorite things: hot cocoa with marshmallows on blustery days like today.

A few plans for the rest of the week: thrift store shopping with my best friend and my neice's birthday party, both on Saturday.

Our military insurance has kicked in and I have a doctor appointment next Tuesday first thing in the morning! I feel like hope has been graciously given back to me when I thought I would plunge deeper into the abyss. Constant pain is no picnic and it is increasing. From what I can feel, the knot in my stomach is about the size of my hand.

Anyway, I am glad to feel there is a light at the end of the tunnel and am anxious to find out exactly what's going on with my body and get relief at last. Then, happy days will be here again!

I finally got around to taking the Halloween decorations down from the front porch this morning. That had been bugging the heck out of me, so I am glad it is done!

As of now, Alfred is headed to Mississippi where he and his team will start the mobilization process. I am missing him like crazy and I still have another 362 days to go.... I am going to do my best to enjoy this year and keep myself busy with several projects, but I sure will be glad when this is all over.

Here is a picture of my husband & his team, taken this morning, as they headed out. Alfred is in the solid green jacket. Wish I could have been there!

Wish I could say that I felt better physically, but that just isn't the case. I guess this is going to be the way it is until I can get this all taken care of. Nevertheless, I am going to do light homemaking and try to be satisfied with that until I can do more.

With that said, I am off to do a little cleaning and enjoy the rest of the day. Hope you enjoy yours, too!

We've had another taste of Autumn the past few days. It was quite chilly outdoors. I turned the heat on this morning to take the chill out of the house. The utility bill was atrocious the last few months of summer, so I am now trying to keep it as low as possible.

After the day I had yesterday, I will be taking it easy again today. I am still not 100%. Back in July, I had a pap smear and my gynecologist thinks I have uterine fibroids. I am waiting for our military insurance to kick in so I can have a uterine ultrasound done and hopefully a partial hysterectomy. I have been in pain for well over a year now and it has really ramped up the past few months. I feel best while laying down, but I can't lay down all the time! I have a home, children and pets to care for. So I am in a predicament.

This evening we are going to Mama's for dinner. Most of my siblings will be over watching the football game. I could care less about football, but it will be nice to visit with family and have one of my Mama's home-cooked meals. :)

I better close for now so I can try to do a little around the house. Enjoy the weekend!

It has been a hard couple of days.

Yesterday I said farewell to the love of my life for a year while he serves yet again overseas in the military. There were tears from us both and long embraces. I didn't want to let him go, but at last I had to because I had a 5-6 hour drive back home.

I am proud to say that despite my penchant for panic attacks (which are mostly controlled by medicine) I drove through Birmingham and Montgomery with no problems! I am darn proud of myself! And I am ever so thankful my Mama went along with me just in case I needed her. She's the best!

Today, I was in so much physical pain that I ended up vomiting. I haven't done that in years! I took it easy for the rest of the day, though I did cook dinner - a quick and easy casserole dish that I know the girls will eat.

I was able to talk to Alfred a few times today and he's going to try to call me later before bed. It helps to be able to hear his voice and talk to him.

I am now off to watch tv with Kayla. Enjoy your evening!

Gratitude

There is nothing I love better than decorating my home on a budget! With a little creativity and a willingness to DIY, you can make a beautiful home without spending a lot of money.

I purchased this little wall sticker at Dollar Tree for $1. I placed in the dining room over the entry way to the kitchen.

This cute little acorn was just $4 at Dollar General. I fell in love with it right away and just had to have it!

I placed the acorn above my sink area that is decorated for Autumn.

Here is a closer view of the acorn with one of my favorite pieces, the white owl vase that I purchased a few months ago for $10 at Trees and Trends. I have a thing for owls...they fascinate me. :)

Fluffing My Nest

Last night, my neighbor across the street gave me a whole bunch of home goods she was going to take to charity. I spent the day fluffing my nest, making it cozy and warm for the Autumn and Winter months.

The little round table, lamp, and faux plant are new additions to our home along with the floral rug beneath the two chairs.

Also new to this area are the grapevine wreath and the sheer curtain I fashioned above the mirror.

In the corner, there is a new cloth over the end table....

The large area rug is a new (and very welcome) addition to the living room along with the faux cactus and cinnamon scented candles on the table. Oh and the sheers and lined drapes hanging on the window are "new", too!

The Dining Room

Thanks for returning for my home tour! Today I am sharing the dining room.

I created an Autumn centerpiece with items already on hand on our lovely table. The freezer I moved into the kitchen used to be beneath the posterboard . I love how open this space looks now! You can also see into my office from this angle. But that's okay because it's neat and clean, too!

The microwave stand hold my cookbooks on the bottom shelf. The top shelf, though bare here, holds my current reads, Bible, and notebooks. I tend to create piles on the table and this will help keep the table-top clear. I placed an Autumn-colored rug in front of the shelf with a more modern design. I am leaning more towards the modern look these days.

The black bowl. Yeah, that's the dogs' water bowl. We bought it at the hardware store in the horse section. We have to fill this one only once a day verses twenty like the smaller one we had. :)

My Kitchen

While my husband's been gone for training for his upcoming deployment, I have been busy deep-cleaning our home. Let's begin in the kitchen, shall we?

This is the shelf above my sink that I decorated for Autumn with things I already had on hand.

Looking into the kitchen from the dining room. I moved the freezer into the kitchen and moved the microwave/stand out. I also streamlined the counter, keeping only the necessities out.

Above my freezer, I moved a few pictures around to create a cute little corner.

I have plans for the kitchen in the near future. I want to paint the cabinets black and buy new hardware in brushed nickle. I also plan to strip the wallpaper border and paint the walls, replace the light fixture and put in new linoleum in. Here is the inspiration picture for the black cabinets:

After the Rain

After many days of rain, the remnants of Tropical Storm Lee have finally moved north and in its wake there is sunshine and cooler temperatures. Oh, it is so beautiful out! We are to have Autumn-like weather all week long! That's a good thing because I have a lot of yard work to catch up, plus there are tons of fallen tree limbs all over that need to be picked up and gathered into a pile for pick up.

Though it is not yet Autumn, I feel the nesting urge. I want to deep clean and fluff our home, work on projects I haven't had time to do, spend time outside in the fresh air and sunshine working and relaxing, and bring back our favorite comfort foods. Food like chicken and dumplings, roast with potatoes, carrots and gravy, oatmeal cookies with golden raisins and chocolate chips just like Mama used to make.

Of course, I'd like to try a few new recipes. It is too easy for me to slip into food ruts. Then cooking becomes a drudgery. No, it's time to expand my food repertoire.

This and that

Last night Alfred, the girls, and I went to church. I liken it to a homecoming. We have a history with these people and they are like family to us. It had been much too long since we have been to church and I have greatly missed it!

I was thankful to get my grocery shopping done fairly early this morning. We have a tropical disturbance in the Gulf that will give us lots of rain throughout the weekend. I made it there and back before the first bands of rain came. The rain is most appreciated. It's been a hot, dry summer and the earth, as well as my flower beds, could use a long refreshing drink.

As far as grocery shopping went, I feel I did fairly well with having spent only $100.90 for a family of six. No coupons were used, though I have a stack waiting to be cut and organized. Next week I hope to do better.

I expected there to be a bit of an adjustment period with my coming home from the working world. This past week has been fabulous in the fact that I am no longer punching a time-clock, but at the same time I feel a bit adrift and disconnected from my home. As August is coming to a close, I am looking forward to September and hopefully cooler temperatures.

This morning I noticed that the leaves are beginning to fall from the trees and that the humdity has been low in the early hours. It is so pleasant out I think I should begin my day's work in the yard before the temperature climbs in the afternoon as it typically does.

I am finding myself longing for the heartier Autumn meals and baking. Are you? I would like to put together a list of menus to take the agony out of meal-planning each week.

While working, coupon-clipping was non-existant for me, so I am anxious to put that back into practice and save a little money at the grocery store. I also want to check out the PX, since we are military, to compare prices with our local stores. It just may be worth the trip.

With Autumn approaching, I am feeling the need to stock the larder. I find it so satisfying to be well-stocked in meats and non-perishable foods. I neglected doing so while working, so I must get back to this once again.

Daily I need to write down my cleaning goals for the day, lest I fritter away my time as I am prone to do. Best to plan my work and work my plan I dare say!

The Homemaker Has Returned!

I am once again a full-time homemaker! No longer do I have to work according to someone else's schedule. My time is my own and it is heavenly! I have spent the past two days cleaning, cooking and working on projects that I haven't had the time or energy to get to while working outside the home.

I am thrilled to be here with the girls during the day and when my husband comes home for lunch and to have a good dinner ready when he comes home from work. This is especially important since we recently found out he is being deployed once more and will leave before the end of the year. I want to spend as much time with him as possible.

I am looking forward to getting back to blogging on a regular basis. :)

Today I am thankful for:

~ A good night's rest, finally! The dogs usually wake me up multiple times a night, but they were good last night and I slept soundly. Boy, how I needed it!

~ Golden sunshine, blue skies, green grass and trees, dots of color from flowers, and bird-song. The beauty of summer minus the heat and humidity. :)

~ Music for its beauty and soul-stirring qualities. I wish I had learned to play multiple instruments as a child, but alas I can always sing. And I'm not half bad if I do say so myself...

~ Chocolate marshmallow cereal. It's not the healthiest, but it sure is good!

~ Fresh flowers, scented candles, cozy throws and pillows, comfort foods, good books, movies and music...all things that make for cozy home-life.

Recently, I finished reading Ree Drummond's book, The Pioneer Woman: From Black Heels to Tractor Wheels--a Love Story. I loved it! I was often found giggling - much to my husband's dismay when I was reading in bed and he was trying to go to sleep. Ree is down-to-earth and very funny and I was sad to see the book end. Thank goodness she has a blog!

It was a long, hot day at work. I was ever so glad when 4 o'clock finally rolled around. My co-workers always make fun because I don't stick around to chit-chat when my shift is over (nor do I go there on my off days!). I am out the door and down the highway before they know it - happily driving home.

Now that I am home, I am looking forward to the next two days that I get to spend at home with my husband and children. If things work out as I suspect they may, I will be home full-time once again very, very soon. My heart rejoices merrily at the mere thought!

~ The rain which is helping our drought conditions and has brought with it slightly cooler temperatures. It is a nice break from the scorching heat and humidity here in the South.

~ My dogs always being so happy to see me. They act like they haven't seen me in years everytime I walk through the door. I love them!

~ Receiving Above Rubies magazine in the mail today.

~ Remembering back a few nights ago when my husband told me that he really, really, REALLY loves me....even more now than the day we married and why. Nineteen years together and still going strong. I can't imagine life without him.

~ Having already run my errands (and not gettinng rained on!) so I can spend a cozy evening here at home with my family.

Finding Balance

It's my day off and I have been getting caught up on my cleaning. There was laundry to do, floors to sweep and vacuum, dishes to wash, decluttering (always decluttering)... I don't want to spend my off days cleaning. There has to be a better way.

I am going to give FlyLady a try. I am hoping that by establishing simple morning and evening routines, spending fifteen minutes decluttering and doing zone work each day, I can keep the chaos (Can't Have Anyone Over Syndrome) at bay.

You would think I'd have this working and homemaking thing down pat by now, but I don't. I have never been very good at balancing, and yet it is thing I must master if I am to keep my sanity. Clutter and messiness zaps my energy, steals my clarity of mind, and overwhelms me.

I tend to be a perfectionist. I want to do things perfectly or not at all. This is not conducive to a clean house! Acknowledging this tendency is the first step in overcoming it and getting control of my home and life.

Here's to new beginnings!

A New Direction?

I haven't written in so long because the direction of my life has changed so much in recent months. When I first began this blog, homemaking was my primary occupation. I had time to putter and primp my home, work in the yard, cook good meals and bake loads of goodies.

Now I am working outside the home and am now also a Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant. July has been especially hectic. At the beginning of the month, we traveled to Missouri to see Joel graduate from basic training and AIT. Since then, I have quadrupled my efforts with MK. I feel like I've been running non-stop!

I don't really know what direction to take with my blog. I don't have loads of time for leisurely homemaking and decorating. Meals have resigned to quick, easy and not at all nutritious. I am feeling I don't have anything worthy to share at this point.

I haven't yet decided whether I will shut this blog down or not. I hate the idea of it. So tell me, dear Readers, what would you like me to share about?

My, it's been terribly hot here. My car read 102 degrees this afternoon when I got off work. If it's this hot now, I dread the month of August when temperatures really soar!

We were super busy at work today and I was so glad when it came time to clock out. I came home and took a nap to try to ward off a massive headache. Once I woke up, I was able to tidy up the house a bit and wait for my man to come home. :)

I know I haven't posted very much lately here on my blog. The truth of the matter is I am finding it hard to glean inspiration. I go to work and then I come home to work some more. Not very inspiring, is it? That is the season I am in at the moment.

I was reading through some of my blog archives the other day and I was struck by how much happier and peaceful I was. I would like to get back to that place again.

Back to Work

I have had a wonderful mini-vacation the past five days. I puttered around the house, enjoyed dips in the pool, took afternoon naps, read books, and tackled a few projects I have been wanting to get to. I painted the front porch columns, the front door, and the porch shutters....now the other shutters look pretty shabby. I'll try to get those done next weekend!

It is incredibly hot and dry here. Yesterday the high temperature reached 100 degrees and it will be the same today. We've had no rain so the grass isn't growing and looks horrible, as does my flower beds. I'm considering running the sprinklers for an hour after dark to give my yard a nice cool drink. Lord knows it needs it!

One of our cats, Clover, has been gone for weeks now. It's not like her to disappear so I am afraid she is no longer living. I miss her terribly.....she was so sweet and loving. And yet, I hang on to a tiny sliver of hope that she will come home.

Now it's time for me to pay bills and then get ready for work. Hope you have a beautiful day!

A Trip to the Zoo

Since we have an annual membership to the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo (you know, The Little Zoo That Could?), we go fairly often. Yesterday was no exception. We arrived about 30 minutes before a wildlife presentation was to begin. We learned about (and was able to pet) beareded dragons, boa constrictor, guinea pigs, and ferrets. We also learned about Maccaws like 17 year old Bo. Isn't he pretty?

We passed by an exhibit with baby goats, rabbits, and chickens. Can you believe how the sheep was letting her hold him like a baby? So sweet! His name was Chubaka. :)

See the little bitty black and white goat? That one was my favorite!! I would totally buy one if they stayed tiny like that. I love it!

This little fellow came to the fence and let me pet him. :)

Gators cooling off....

Before we left, the baby tiger exhibit was taking a break for lunch. But the handler, let us pet the baby Bengal and was gracious enough to let me get a picture of him.

We had a great time and learned a lot on our visit. Next time we go, we are going on a Camel Ride!

Home Work

The last three days have been fabulous as I have been off work. Today is my last day home and then it's back to the daily grind....

Having read 27 things to Feng Shui Your Home Monday night, I was inspired to declutter even more. I culled through my clothes in the closet and dresser. My husband now has more clothes than I do! I got rid of several purses and all of my clothes that either did not fit right, were too small, or I no longer find to my liking.

I also gave the porch columns a fresh coat of white paint and will do the same with the front door today. Soon I hope to get to the house shutters. I love working on my house!!

I found a lovely fabric that I want to use to recover the seats of my two cane-back chairs in the living room, along with make slipcovers for the large throw pillows on my sectional sofa. We have decided upon a lovely blue seafoam color to paint the living room...not to dark or light. A nice compromise I'd say.

Well, it's time for me to close for now. I promised the girls I would take them to the zoo today. It is already hot and humid....ugh!

Life and Leisure

Kenzie and I did the grocery shopping this morning shortly after 7am. I wanted to avoid the crowds this afternoon (and traffic!) with it being the lasty day of public school here, plus the start of Memorial Day weekend! I was able to stock up on a few things and saved a little money with coupons.

Once home, Kenz and I unloaded the car. I put away all of the groceries then had breakfast while surfing the internet. All too soon it was time to leave for work. Work was super busy today for lunch rush and traffic was backed up for miles with everyone trying to get down to the beach!

When I arrived home from work, I changed into my swinsuit and joined the girls in the pool. It's so relaxing to just lay on a float in the sun while listening to the birds singing. I made up my mind right then and there that I am going to enjoy each and every second of my off days!

Yes, I have house and yard work to do, but I plan to mindfully go about my tasks instead of rushing through trying to get everything done in a hurry. I plan to include a bit of leisure time, too. Time in the pool, reading, giving myself a pedicure, watching a movie or two, maybe an outing with the girls to the zoo and naps. Oh yes, there must be naps!

Life need not be all work and drudgery. It is good and healthy to have regular doses of leisure time. All work and no play leads to burn-out and that is never a good thing. Life is too short to not be enjoyed.

The Master Bath

This is my bathroom. It is long but not very wide. It is wall-papered, but we would like to eventually take that down and paint.

The sink/vanity holds much of my Mary Kay beauty products. The wicker container is divided into two sections: Alfred gets one half and I the other (along with the rest of the space!:)

Another shot of the sink/vanity...I love the mirrors but not the gold tone. They will be repainted white when we start redoing the bath.

And finally, my shower curtain with it's delicate embroidered pink flowers and cream tassels.

My Office

This is looking into my office from the dining room....

My desk where the blogging magic happens and where I visit with all of my blog friends and kindred spirits.

The sunflower picture was made by my 10 year old daughter, Kenzie, using acrylic paints on a canvas. Didn't it turn out wonderful? The picture in the pink frame on the left is my husband, Alfred. This was how he looked when we met. Absolutely dreamy!! I love Willow Tree figurines....can you tell?

At Christmas last year, I added the children figurines to my Willow Tree collection. They signify our family.

The one holding the cat represents Kayla (age 14) who loves animals. If you have a question about animals, she's your go-to girl! The other represents my spunky, sassy Kenzie girl, who is not afraid to rumble with the boys if need be. :)

The boy figurines represent my step-son Joel, who will be 19 in July and is currently away at military training (I hate the word step-son! I consider him my son and treat him as if he were my own!) and Kendall who is 18. He also wants to join the military.

This is my first Willow Tree figurine. It represents me and my husband, Alfred, and our love which has sustained us thus far. Next month we will celebrate 19 years of marriage!

My Kitchen and Dining Room

I love my cottage kitchen! I have baskets to hold dish cloths and hand towels. The red cups in the windowsills are Kenzie's science experiments. I have two coffee pots - one for coffee and one for tea-making. And I love having a lot of cabinets!

This is my dining room. I have a gorgeous chandelier hanging above the table, but it's hard to get a good picture.

This is my centerpiece - a lace doily and a decorative candle holder.

I have also used it as a vase for flowers as well.

I am all about pretty practicality!

A Positive Frame of Mind

I only worked an hour and a half today and was able to come home as we had too many people at work. Fine by me! I have all sorts of things on my to-do list and while I won't get all of them marked off, I can do one or two.

Today I want to finish cleaning my dining room, detail the interior of my car and tidy up the carport and front porch. They are all fairly easy jobs that won't take much time.

Several of you have expressed concern that I not take on too much along with reminders to take care of myself. I plan on taking a pleasant little nap this afternoon. I finished reading Peace and Plenty by Sarah Ban Breathnach last night (finally). And I am planning to fully rest and recharge after dinner while watching my favorite show, Biggest Loser.

Sometimes I do forget to take of me, so thank you for all of your kind comments and reminders!

I am finding myself in a much more positive frame of mind these days. I can't pin-point why exactly, but I like it! Partly I believe it is the acceptance that for now I must work part-time and my schedule is not bad at all. Also, I feel as if I am better balancing work and home. The decluttering and deep cleaning has helped tremendously in that regard.

Right now I am just feeling extremely blessed. I hope you are, too!

A Home of Peace

I have just returned home from the VA Hospital with husband. He has PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and a noticeably shorter fuse, so he is trying medication to help before his symptoms get out of hand. He is not a complainer and is a man of few words as far as discussing feelings, but he is a wonderful, loving man and I hope the meds do him good. There is only so much a wife can do, but the best thing is to make a peaceful home-life.

Me? I am off work today and plan to use my time cleaning and decluttering my home and being with my children. I have put a roast on in the crockpot and will bake a chocolate cake for dessert. I will make a pitcher of sweet tea for my husband to enjoy when he comes home this evening and fruit punch for the children.

When my love comes home, we'll talk about our days and then we, as a family, will gather around the table to eat a good homemade dinner. I will clean up the kitchen and go rest and relax with the family reading and watching tv and when our tummies have settled from dinner, we'll have dessert. Soon after that, it will be time for bed for morning comes early and with it back to work.

But tonight, there will be peace, love, and togetherness.

Sunday

I have been quite busy lately. Not only am I working outside the home - but I am once again decluttering and deep cleaning. I do a little in the morning before work and then again afterwards. I love the feeling of purging items we no longer need or use and reorganizing our spaces. It gives me a sense of peace and freedom.

On Friday, we got some much needed rain. We really need much more, but I am sure my flowers were thankful for the watering. Last night it was breezy and cool and I was so cold inside the house even. I had to put on winter pajama pants to go to sleep. I can not sleep if I am very cold.

The dogs woke me up at 5am to go outside and it was cool still. The sky is overcast (oops, now it is sunny!). I am hoping to get into the pool later with the girls and my sister, neice and nephew are supposed to come over, too, to visit and get in the pool.

There is always so much I want to do and so little in time in which to accomplish it! With that said, I will close for now and get back to my decluttering and deep cleaning.

A Day Off

Today I am off from work. Oh, how I look forward to those days! I had made up my mind that before my hair cut this morning I would browse in a couple of stores and pick up a few items needed here at home.

I found the loveliest pint of pink paint in the oops section at Walmart. I have a small dresser on my side of the bed that would look adorable with a fresh coat of paint. I spent $3 on it. Also purchased was a white exterior paint to paint the porch columns, front door and house shutters. Though I won't get to those projects today, it's nice to know I have the items already on hand when I do have time to tackle them. This weekend, perhaps?

For the yard, I purchased a garden hose and sprayer for the front yard - a very much needed purchase! - and a pair of pruning shears for my flowers. The roses in particular always cause me to draw my hand back in pain from their prickly thorns.

It was nice to be out alone browsing through housewares to see what the latest styles and colors are in home decor. I can't say I care very much for the very modern prints on the bedding. It just seems so aloof and cold to me. I much prefer cozy, casual, and comfortable with a little pretty thrown in for good measure.

I picked up a few paint chips in blues and yellows. Alfred and I can not come to an agreement on the blues. He wants ultra light colors and I don't. I suppose I will just keep looking until I find a shade we both agree on. Hmmph!

Swirly Goodness

Life has been full of swirly goodness lately. I have limited my computer time and have found myself enjoying more movies with my family and reading. I am currently reading Anne of Green Gables for the first time. I had tried to read it several times before, but just couldn't get into it. After reading an article in the latest Victoria magazine (May/June 2011), I was apt to try once more and have found myself thoroughly enjoying the book!

We spent a fair amount of money on the girls this past week, which we seldom get to do often, for no other reason than we love them and know these things will bring more joy and pleasure to our home-life. They received a pink notebook computer ($150), two Sing*a*ma*jigs ($4 each), a Magic School Bus Science Kit ($10) and Loopz game ($12.50) - all of which were at rock bottom prices and 25% off to boot for a total of $147.15! Plus we bought a swimming pool ($79) for the yard.

I figure the swimmining pool will save us time and money spent going to the beach. Travel is horrible here in the Spring/Summer months for we live in a touristy area. I am all for less aggravation and making home an enjoyable place to be.
The girls stayed with my sister last night and Kendall was out with friends so Alfred and I watched The Karate Kid - the new one. While it was a good movie, it doesn't come close to surpassing the original one made in 1984 starring Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita.

We had gone to bed afterwards, missing the news about bin Laden's death. All I can say about it it is it is about darn time! I feel no sympathy for a person who can take so many lives without remorse. Good riddance!

I am still working and selling Mary Kay cosmetics. And I am getting better about balancing home and work. I am ever learning and growing. Oh there is loads more happening in our shiny lives but I must go for now. I will try to pop in more often so as not to worry my dear readers and friends.

It has been a gorgeous weekend! We have had sunny skies and cool temperatures with low humidity. Yesterday we took the girls and a friend of theirs hiking on a nature trail at the State Park in Gulf Shores. We didn't get to the end of the trail but hiked 2.5 miles in all.

I missed watching Beverly Lewis' The Shunning on tv last night. I forgot all about it! We did watch Evan Almighty - which was a cute movie - and a couple shows on Animals Planet (It's Me or the Dog and Cats 101). Alfred and I were just plain tired last night and went to bed before 10pm. I guess that's a good thing because the dogs wake us up early every morning, like it or not. Today it was 6am.

With this cooler weather, the dogs have been enjoying the outdoors. It's so funny to watch Zeus stalk Mr. Cheeky. Then Cheeky will bark at Zeus and then the chase is on! Gracie tries to get in on it, too, but she is mostly interested in watching the squirrels in the trees!

No real plans today other than going to visit with Mama and to tidy up around the house. Monday comes all too soon. Hope you are having a beautiful weekend!

Our Cozy Cottage

We managed to get the yard work done this weekend and this is the finished result. I can think of a ton of projects that I would like to do in the front yard alone! The columns on the porch need a fresh coat of white paint, as do the shutters. And I still want to finish the flower beds in front. I am thinking hanging ferns would be a nice addition to the porch, too.

A couple of Adirondack chairs would be lovely under the River Birch, don't you agree?

The roses in the backyard are full of abundant blooms! We (Alfred) finally got the pond cleaned out, but it was getting dark when finished so I couldn't take a decent pic. There are a zillion projects to do in the backyard! But bit by bit we'll get it done. :)

Suzie Homemaker Doesn't Live Here Anymore

After reading Debra's post yesterday titled, A Funeral for Suzy, I realized in a way I have been grieving the loss of being a full-time homemaker. When I started work back in November, I had no idea I would still be working outside the home six months later.

I find it hard. Hard to get things done that I previously had loads of time for. I haven't been able to read a good book in many months....I'd lost interest in just about everything and nothing seemed appealing. Spiritually I lost my center and didn't pray nor pick up my Bible for months. I have been in a stagnant place.

But I am beginning to come out of it. I am at a different stage of life right now. I would prefer to be home full-time and I will be again. How am I gonna make this happen?

~ I am going to keep clipping coupons and matching them to sale items at the grocery store.

~ I will plan my meals each week based on what's on sale, look for new quick & easy dishes and get my girls to help with the baking of treats.

~ I am going to create a plan for my homemaking and do a little each morning and each afternoon.

~ Save change in my big glass jug and tuck dollars back as I am able, while I keep contributing to my Christmas Club account.

~ Keep lights, computer, and various items off and/or unplugged when not in use.

~ Clean up the kitchen right after dinner.

~ Do one load of laundry each day.

~ Make Sunday a day of REST.

~ And, most importantly, trust God to make a way out of the workforce and back home full time.

Did my grocery shopping for the week. The total started out at $127.68.

I got several items for FREE after using my Reward card:

gallon of milk

Nutrigrain bars

cranapple juice

Martha White muffin mix

two Kraft mac and cheese

Ronzoni spaghetti noodles

loaf of Wonder bread

In all, I had $4 in manufacturer coupons and a $5 off $55 coupon with my toal out of pocket expense being $85.13. That's a savings of $42.55!

I had enough pocket money to buy a $5 box of Krispy Kreme doughnuts from a teen girl standing at an intersection with money to spare. All in all, a good week. :)

I love this house down the road from me! Whenever I pass by, I always gaze with admiration at the neat and pretty landscaping.

I hope one day my yard will be just as pretty!

Flower Garden and Plans

I am always anxious to leave work and return to the comforts of home. Yes, work awaits me at home, but it is a soul-satisfying kind of work.

Today I worked in the back yard trimming hedges and picking up the junk Zeus manages to find amongst the bushes. I swept the back steps and deck, wound the garden hose back up, and enjoyed the fresh air and bird-song.

I found a lovely garden statue that I've ordered to go in my front flower bed amongst the Burgandy Roses. Here she is:

I have many projects planned for my yard but this year I want to focus on getting those two front flower beds filled with gorgeous flowers and finishing it up with edging and mulch. This is the first thing everyone sees when they pass our home and stop to visit, thus my desire to make it pretty.

The Burgandy Roses are growing splendidly and are plentiful in blooms. The Pink Knock-Out Roses are gorgeous. One is doing quite well while the other is not so much, but I believe it is about to take off. It is green and it has a new rosebud about to open. So all is not lost!

I have a question for those of you who are garden-savvy. What companion flowers should I plant alongside my roses? And how do you keep the beds flowering throughout the year? It all seems terribly confusing to me, so I would appreciate any advice my knowledgeable gardening friends can provide. We are in Zone 8.

Well, it is time for me to call it a night. The morning comes early and I need my beauty sleep!

Blissfull Days

It has been a delightful day so far! This morning I had to buy a few groceries and odds and ends. Since it was very early yet, I went to Walmart. I found two cutie patootie shirts: one solid pink for $9 and the other pink pastel striped v-neck tee for $5. While at the store I picked up the ingerdients to make Strawberry Shortcake for dessert. My love declared me The Bomb-Diggety 'cause that's one of his favorite desserts. :)

I was able to get off work early so I rushed home to pick up Alfred for lunch. I had a delicious Oreo Twisted Frosty and took a nap. Now it's time for me to blissfully tidy and fluff my nest.I have two hours before my sweet honey comes home from work. We are having a simple supper tonight: fried fish, fries and a salad.

Beach Days and Decisions

We went to the beach for the first time this year. It was warm and beautiful with our sugar white sand and the water was crystal clear. However, the girls said the water is still freezing!

Tonight is the Super Moon and we plan to check out that out tonight.

The azaleas are about to be in full bloom in our yard. They were recently cut back when the fence was installed. The jasmine is still in bloom and sharing her lovely scent. The flowers along the back fence line are even more beautiful now (see pic above). The river birch trees now have tiny green leaves also, but nothing so far on the oak or the pecans.

I'm not sure what we will do tomorrow. I have cleaning to do and grocery shopping. Alfred is not feeling well and says he has a chest cold coming on. So we'll probably hang out here at home.

Alfred will be going to Warrant Officer school sometime this year and will be gone for many months. I have decided to leave the work force at that time. He'll be making good money on active duty and I want to be home with my girls, have time to work on my home and yard, return to cooking and baking mostly from scratch, and economizing.

Until then, I will just have to accept the fact that I will not be able to get everything done, so I'll focus on the main things - laundry, meals, cleaning kitchen and bathrooms - and I'll get to the rest as I am able. But I want to be come more mindful as I go about living because we only get one shot at life and I want to live it to the fullest!

Saturday Tidings

Good Morning, friends! The sun is shing, the birds are singing, and it looks to be a beautiful day here in my little corner of the world. My pear tree burst into bloom last weekend. My, it sure is pretty. Nature is a wondrous thing. One day the tree was bare and the next - pow! - pretty green buds and white blooms.

I picked up two pink Knock Out Roses plants last night to go in my front flower beds. Those beds are my main goal for the yard this year....I want fill them with flowers and make them gorgeous. I am going to have my Rose Cottage yet!

One of my main projects this weekend wasd to get the sunroom clean. My step-son Joel left it a wreck before he left for basic training last month. I tackled that project last night and it looks sooo much better. I want to try to go through the sunroom closets and reorganize them.

I do my housework in little bits of time as I have the energy to tackle chores. I try not to let things get out of hand - especially dishes and laundry! I am usually in bed by 9:30pm and up at 5:30am when the dogs wake me up to let them out. Then I usually work weekdays from 10am - 2pm (I recently asked for my hours to be cut back as it was physically painful for me). But while the extra money does help out, I still miss being at home full-time. There is just never enough time to tackle all of the projects/chores I want to do.

We recently bought a new sectional sofa and coffee table.

The sofa has two built in recliners and a chaise lounge.

We love it!

The coffee table was on clearance, but we got it FREE after a military discount.

Eventually I will repaint the living room and redo these cane back chairs.

This and That

We have a Yellow-bellied Sapsucker who loves to hang around in our backyard by the pond. He doesn't seem the least bit concerned with us or the dogs, allowing us to come within a few mere feet from him while we work! He is a fascinating creature to watch.

I was hoping to watch my latest Netflix movie - Eat Pray Love - until I saw it was nearly five hours long! I think I will wait until Saturday to watch it....it's supposed to rain most of the day anyway. What better way to spend a rainy day than curling up on the couch to watch a good movie!

As I put away laundry last night, I culled a few items from my closet that I no longer where and are not in my colors. I have determined I look best in a Summer palette. You can determine your colors at this website. Here are my colors:

Spring Dreams

(Love this blue & white room. It's modern and yet pretty without being overly done.)

With our Spring-like weather I am dreaming of all the home decor and outdoor projects I would love to tackle. I have been looking for ideas and inspiration every where. I love bringing beauty to our home and yard.

I had my hours at work cut back because it was too hard on me physically. I hope to eventually quit working all together so I can focus on my home and family and building my Mary Kay business. Now that is a fun job!

I am looking forward to being home more and having time to do more things. It's been hard keeping up with the homekeeping....a lot harder than I thought it would be and my days off would fly by much too fast.
