Simplicity

Why is it that simplicity seems to elude me? I can tell you that my house is too small, and it is in many ways, but the real problem is we simply have too much stuff. And no matter how much I get rid of, it never seems to change. Also, how can Mama think I can't possibly have anything to possibly throw away or donate?

I told Alfred over the weekend that I sometimes dream of getting rid of absolutely everything and starting over - only buying the bare necessities.

Just enough and nothing more.

That is my goal. To make it a reality I just really need to get ruthless with my belongings and clear out all that is unnecessary from my life. I am starting today.

I know what you mean. I go through spurts of "editing" out things. I just can't seem to do it all at once, though; it's a little painful.

I'm a homeschooler as well. Saw your comment on another blog and decided to stop in to say hello.

Hi tracy,

I've been catching up with your blog and agree with you about the simple things. Also read about your homeschool post and it sounds like you do so much with your kids. Hope you are having a wonderful Fall.

I know exactly what you mean!

I love unstuffed drawers, a little empty space on the shelf, closet doors that shut with no effort.

But we Americans have so much stuff! I see it at every garage sale I go.

Best wishes to you for getting your life in the order you hope it will be.

Hi Tracy, Decluttering is simple...keep only what you NEED or LOVE,box up stuff you just CAN"T get rid of,then don't touch it for a year and see how useful it really is.Everything else goes to charity or a garage sale. When so much "stuff" goes out of your life you will be surprised what will come in.

Good for you! We downsized a year ago and it was such a relief! We got rid of loads of crap. It was like removing a giant gorilla off our backs! Simple living is good...especially these days...

Our home is now 960 sq.feet...and I have way to much...some days I could TOSS it all...just clean, cook, read and blog..a little stitchery here and there and maybe only 5 outfits to wear...that would be simple living to me?

I wish I knew things about square footage and the exact size of my house. I can tell you that recently I moved from a 4 bedroom gate house with living room, dining room 3 bathrooms and a huge sun room to a small, cozy twin that is half the size. I had to "let go" of half the furnishings. What was left, I had to put half in storage. The whole process of clearing out the things that no longer served me was so healing.

We were getting ready to buy a large house in NJ right before moving in to the cozy twin. Events happened and we decided on the twin for the time being. Sometimes I miss the idea of that big house but when I look at our cozy space, I'm just as happy. In fact, it's a fun challenge to downsize and come up with space saving ideas.
