Making Home a Haven with Domestic Pursuits - part 3

Since you spend a third of your life in bed, your bedroom should be beautiful, restful, and comfortable. Ideally, there should be no clutter. Clear the tops of dressers and nightstands and only have 2 or 3 items on each surface to add interest and beauty.
Your bed should be comfortable to promote a good night's rest. Invest in a good foam mattress pad and pillows that support your neck properly. I have heard before that using a satin pillowcase is helpful for ladies by reducing the lines and creases in the skin that comes with sleeping. Shop the white sales for bargains on sheet sets for the beds. You want the highest thread count you can afford. It's nice to have cotton sheets for the warm months and flannel sheets when it's cold. An afghan at the foot of the bed is a nice touch.
You want soft lighting in the bedroom - not a harsh overhead glare. Small lamps are nice especially if you like to read before bed. Candles can add romance to the atmosphere, as well as a little music playing softly in the background. Choose beautiful pictures to frame so your eyes have lovely things to gaze upon.
If you have trouble sleeping due to sounds and distractions, try using a box fan for white noise. It helps to muffle the sounds coming from other parts of the house. Or you can use a meditation CD with sounds of the ocean, a thunderstorm, nature, or songbirds. It's a lovely way to drift off to dreamland!
If you prefer the room to be dark, make your own lined curtains. It is much cheaper than buying premade curtains! Use the money you saved to buy decorative curtain rods or a few other accessories.
A few other ideas...
~ Old Time Pottery is a great resource for rugs and decorative items.
~ An unattractive table or nightstand can be repainted or covered with beautiful fabric.
~ Use a basket to hold the things you normally stack on your nightstands (book, journal, tissues, hand lotion, etc.)
~ Use a decorative box or bowl on husband's dresser to hold his keys, change, and wallet.
~Change the hardware on your dresser to give it a new look.
~ Use an inexpensive sleep mask to block light while you rest.
~ Flower swags looks great over doors and windows.
~ Add a plant to help purify the air while you sleep.
~ Have fun and use your creativity!

We have just started listening to a gentle rain music cd while going to sleep. I like it. Helps me to relax. Some of the cd has celtic music along with the gentle rain. Paul downloaded the music from itunes. I wasn't excited about it at first but I like it now. Have you tried it?

Hi Ann, I have one with the sound of the ocean's waves and another of a thunderstorm. They are very relaxing to listen to.
